UNCF & Foot Locker Team Up for Scholarship Fund

The United Negro College Fund and Foot Locker Foundation, Inc. are uniting to offer a scholarship to selected students that are College Freshman, College Junior, College Senior, College Sophomore, High School Graduate, or High School Senior and have a 2.5 minimum GPA. Also, tudents must be attending or planning to attend a UNCF member college or university during the fall of 2010. A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded.

Silent Hero Grant Program

The Silent Hero Grant program was launched to encourage schools and non-profit organizations to expand the reach of underutilized child nutrition programs.

If you are a public, non-profit private school or 501(c)(3) non-profit that participates in the national School Breakfast Program you may qualify for the Alternate Meal Service Breakfast Grant. Alternate meal service is defined as either breakfast in the classroom, grab and go or any other alternate site meal service outside of the standard cafeteria lunch line.

Assistance for 1st Generation College Students

The Suder Scholars Program provides scholarships and personalized support to enable first-generation students to successfully transition to college. Support interventions include a cohort model, dedicated advisor, and other programming such as workshops, social activities, peer mentoring, tutoring, and campus engagement. Investing in scholars through a holistic approach will be measurably more effective and have a greater life impact than providing scholarships alone.

Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program

The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6 to 18) whose efforts have made a positive impact on their communities.

Nominees will be divided into two groups (ages 6 to 12, and 13 to 18). Awards will be given on three levels. More than 2,100 store winners will each be awarded a $50 Kohl’s Gift Card. More than 200 regional winners will each be awarded $1,000 scholarships toward their postsecondary education. Finally, ten national winners will each be awarded $9,000 scholarships (for a total of $10,000 in scholarships each), and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each winner’s behalf.

Contest: Teens to ‘Green’ Their Schools

DoSomething.org and Hewlett-Packard have announced an initiative designed to challenge teens to find new and innovative ways of conserving energy while reducing waste in their schools.

More than a hundred thousand teens are expected to participate in the Increase Your Green campaign, which will run from February 15 through Earth Day on April 22. In addition to traditional “green” projects such as recycling programs and community gardens, teens will be encouraged to explore ways of using technology to save energy.

A panel of judges, including actor and campaign spokesman Nick Cannon, will evaluate the entries based on creativity, innovation, reduction in waste, energy saved, and number of students involved. Each winner will receive up to $5,000 in funding and an HP Artist Edition laptop computer. In addition, the National Grid Foundation will award $1,500 prizes to select students in their service area.

Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program

The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America is accepting entries for its Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program.

This annual initiative is designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls between the ages of 12 and 18. In 2010, Guardian will award prizes to fifteen girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship, are taking the first steps toward financial independence, and make a difference in their schools and communities.

To be eligible, a nominee must be between the ages of 12 and 18 as of December 31, 2009; be enrolled in middle school or high school; and be a U.S. legal resident.

Prizes totaling $30,000 will be granted to three top winners and twelve finalists to further their entrepreneurial pursuits or save for college. Submissions received after the deadline date will be entered in the 2011 competition.

Grants for Projects in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park

The Kresge Foundation is calling for applications for year two of Kresge Community Arts, a national community arts and engagement project being piloted in five cities in the United States, including metropolitan Detroit. Grantseekers are invited to submit applications for projects in Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park that use art and culture as a tool to address community issues.

Individuals and groups, including local artists and historians, neighborhood and homeowner associations, youth with parental consent, service agencies, municipal governments, community development corporations, and arts and cultural organizations, are encouraged to apply.
